With the beginning of the new year my mind has been pondering what pilgrimage is. What is pilgrimage of the heart? Have you ever considered your life a pilgrimage? They say nothing is permanent but change itself. Life is a journey of constant change. For the child of God, pilgrimage means making your home in God alone and viewing life's twists and turns as experiences on your way to a heavenly home. Realizing that health, wealth and status don't bring lasting satisfaction and happiness.
We often face the mountains of change along the way, some rather insurmountable and unchangeable. Reflecting on 2008 I passed through a mountain range. I'll call it the Bitteroot Mountains like those of the same name in Montana. Their names are alcoholism, Lou Gehrig's Disease, divorce, despair, separation from family members, and serious illness of a coworker. Though I myself have not experienced these personally, my loved ones are traveling through them now.
God is our refuge and strength an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging . . . The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. — Psalm 46:1-3,7
I have also learned what the Sovereignty of God is, to trust Him, rest in His care, and that there are no surprises to Him. Circumstances don't make me what I am but reveal what I am.
As you contemplate your pilgrimage, is your heart fixed on Jehovah?
What are some mountains of change you are experiencing?
